inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Communication and Digital has expressed its commitment to tightening oversight of digital platforms to address Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV).
This is a response to the persistently high number of cases of OGBV, particularly against women, which, according to a recent study, reached more than 1,600 cases.
"If it becomes dangerous, we can impose sanctions, including closure," said Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, on Thursday (4/16/2026).
Referring to applicable regulations, including Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning Criminal Acts of Sexual Violence (UU TPKS), digital platforms, which are electronic system operators (PSE), are required to actively prevent and address content related to OGBV.
Meutya stated that this provision ensures that the digital space does not become a place where violence can occur.
Digital platforms must fulfill their responsibility to maintain user safety, especially by siding with victims who are clearly harmed by OGBV.
Meutya also expressed her commitment to strengthening oversight of digital platforms in addressing online-based violence (KBGO) during a meeting with the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan). During the meeting, Komnas Perempuan Chair Maria Ulfah Anshor stated that the high number of reported cases of online-based violence (KBGO) does not reflect the true situation, as many cases remain unreported.
"Limited infrastructure and services in several regions, particularly island and remote areas (3T), also hinder victims from accessing assistance, including for reporting and legal and psychological assistance," she explained.
Komnas Perempuan welcomed the collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Digital to strengthen measures to address harmful content through takedown mechanisms, including for content on sexual violence and exploitation.
"This situation requires joint action, including increasing the responsibility of digital platforms in maintaining a safe space for users, especially women and vulnerable groups," she said.
The collaboration is also aimed at strengthening digital literacy, public campaigns, and developing policies that adapt to technological developments.
