inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Police uncovered a daring attempt by a family to break into an ATM at a minimarket in the Kapuk Raya area of ​​Cengkareng, West Jakarta. The attempt failed after the oxygen used for welding the ATM ran out.

West Jakarta Sub-regional Metro Police Chief, Senior Superintendent Nasriadi, stated that the case was reported in February 2026. The three perpetrators are a family.

The three perpetrators were a stepfather with the initials RH, a biological mother with the initials D, and a child with the initials H.

"The perpetrators consisted of a stepfather, a child, and a mother. The child and mother are biological, while the father is a stepfather," Nasriadi said during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday (9/1/2026).

The method used was quite daring. RH and H entered the minimarket armed with welding equipment to break into the ATM. D, meanwhile, was tasked with monitoring the situation from outside the minimarket.

However, the attempt was halted when the oxygen used for the welding process ran out.

"The perpetrators, RH and H, went inside to break into the ATM, while Mrs. (D) waited outside to observe and monitor the situation. After they went inside and tried to break into the ATM using welding, the oxygen for welding suddenly ran out," said Nasriadi.

Unsuccessful in opening the ATM, the perpetrators then shifted targets. They took several packs of cigarettes inside the minimarket.

Police also discovered that one of the perpetrators was wearing clothing resembling a minimarket employee's uniform. The clothing was purchased online and is believed to have been used to deceive bystanders and CCTV cameras.

In solving this case, police have arrested two perpetrators, H and D. RH remains at large and has been placed on the wanted list (DPO).

Nasriadi stated that the act was allegedly motivated by economic problems. RH allegedly invited his wife to join the theft.

Police also suspect that this was not the first time RH has broken into an ATM using welding equipment. This suspicion arose because he seemed to have understood the method and use special equipment to break into the ATM machine.

"The investigators and I are certain this isn't the first time. If someone is bold enough to use sophisticated tools and extraordinary methods, it means they've done this more than once," said Nasriadi.

From this case, the police secured several pieces of evidence, including a maroon shirt, clothing resembling a minimarket uniform, a cell phone, and a trash can.

Meanwhile, the welding equipment used to break into the ATM was thrown by the perpetrators into the Angke River. Police are still searching for it due to its heavy weight.
