inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai urged the Indonesian National Police (INP)'s Criminal Investigation Agency to implement restorative justice in resolving the alleged electronic media insult case by a comedian Pandji Pragiwaksono against the Toraja people.
Pigai made this statement following Pandji's implementation of Toraja customary law in the alleged insult case.
"The legal process against Pandji Pragiwaksono is within the police's purview. We respect that. However, law enforcement also requires wisdom and restorative justice. The important thing is that Pandji Pragiwaksono has received social punishment," Pigai said, as quoted from his personal social media account @NataliusPigai2 in Jakarta on Saturday (2/28/2026).
According to him, through restorative justice, the police can provide education regarding expressing opinions.
"The police should consider restorative justice by reminding the public to exercise their human rights to thoughts, feelings, and opinions, and refrain from insulting people (ad hominem), accusing others of evil without evidence or facts," he said.
In November 2025, the Toraja Youth Alliance reported Pandji Pragiwaksono to the police for alleged insults and racially and ethnically motivated remarks against the Torajan people.
The alliance believed that Pandji's stand-up comedy performance, which featured a Torajan funeral procession, was insulting and demeaning to the Torajan community. The material was uploaded to Pandji's YouTube account.
The report is currently under investigation by the INP Cyber Crime Directorate. Pandji, along with several witnesses and experts, including the administrator of Pandji's YouTube channel, have been questioned by investigators.
