Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed on Saturday (2/5/2026) that the Indonesian government will continue to utilize coal for power plants to maintain energy efficiency and affordable electricity rates.

Speaking in Jakarta, he said that Indonesia must prioritize national interests and energy security amidst global market shifts.

“I decided, let coal continue for now. This is about survival mode and efficiency. We must not sacrifice our people with high electricity prices,” Minister Bahlil said, as cited by antaranews.com.

He noted that even developed nations in the U.S. and Europe are reconsidering coal to stabilize their domestic energy supplies.

National coal production reached 790 million tons in 2025, with approximately 254 million tons allocated for domestic needs, including the power sector. While the government remains committed to energy transition, Minister Bahlil asserted that a rushed exit from coal is impractical given Indonesia's vast reserves and the need to protect citizens from rising costs.
