inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, has recorded a surge in the number of Indonesian citizens involved in online fraud syndicates, exceeding 6,000, with more than a third of them having returned home.

According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, between January 16 and March 26, 2026, 6,308 Indonesian citizens, former members of online fraud syndicates, reported their presence in Cambodia and requested facilitation for their return to Indonesia.

"Of this number, between January 30 and March 26, 2026, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh has facilitated the return of 2,528 Indonesian citizens to Indonesia in stages," the Indonesian Embassy confirmed in Jakarta on Friday (3/27/2026).

The surge in the number of Indonesian citizens reporting to the Indonesian Embassy coincided with the intensified operations by Cambodian authorities to eradicate online fraud syndicates since mid-January 2026.

Furthermore, the Cambodian government targeted its territory to be free of online fraud syndicate activities before the Khmer New Year celebrations in mid-April 2026.

"This target contributed to the increasing number of Indonesian citizens leaving the network," stated the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh.

To expedite the repatriation process, the Indonesian Embassy continues to maintain close communication with the Cambodian government, particularly to obtain the waiver of overstay fines for Indonesian citizens.
