inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI), Jusuf Kalla, stated that mosques not only serve as places of worship, but must also be centers of Islamic civilization.
DMI Chairman Jusuf Kalla stated that Indonesia has the largest Muslim population and the largest number of mosques in the world, with an estimated 800,000 mosques across the country.
"Mosques are, of course, primarily places of worship. We pray five times a day, perform Tarawih prayers, and perform various other acts of worship. But the function of mosques goes beyond that; they also serve as a place of unity for the community," said Jusuf Kalla on Tuesday (3/10/2026).
He emphasized the uniqueness of mosques because they can serve as gathering places for Muslims from various organizational backgrounds and regions without barriers.
He cited the example of how in mosques, Muslims from various organizations, such as Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, can worship together without distinction.
Besides being places of worship and unity, Jusuf Kalla believes that mosques must also be centers for the formation of civilization. He explained that civilization comes from the word "adab," which reflects good behavior, knowledge, and faith.
"Civilization is born from faith, knowledge, and good behavior. Therefore, mosques must encourage the congregation to seek knowledge, improve their skills, and build character," explained the Chairman of DMI JK.
He also emphasized the importance of improving the congregation's economic capabilities. According to him, Islam teaches its followers to work hard and strive, as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who spent a long time as a trader before becoming a prophet.
"Effort and hard work are part of the Prophet's sunnah. Mosques must also encourage the congregation to develop good economic capabilities," said Jusuf Kalla.
