inp.polri.go.id - Kupang. A patrol car belonging to the East Sumba Police lost control and struck residents and a repair shop in Waingapu City, East Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Sunday (5/24/2026). The patrol car was being driven by the Waingapu Sector City Police Chief, Second Police Inspector Rauta Ubini Kuri.

East Sumba Sub-regional Police Chief, Senior Superintendent Gede Harimbawa, explained that the incident began when the patrol car driven by the police chief passed the location after attending Sunday services.

"It hit a repair shop on the side of the road," he explained on Monday (5/25/2026).

He said that six people were injured as a result of the accident. Two of them reportedly suffered fractured legs and required medical treatment at the Lindimara Christian Hospital in Waingapu.

The incident occurred at around 10:40 a.m. on D.I. Panjaitan Street, Matawai Village, Waingapu City District. In the incident, the motorcycle ridden by Yudiwanto Edi and his wife attempted to overtake the patrol vehicle from the left side. However, the motorcycle allegedly hit the left rear tire of the car, causing the official vehicle to lose control.

"The incident began when the motorcycle rider attempted to overtake the official vehicle from the left side and hit the left rear tire of the car, causing the official vehicle to lose control, veering off the road and onto the sidewalk," he said.

In addition to hitting the pedestrian, he said, the vehicle also struck another motorcyclist before finally coming to a stop after hitting a roadside repair shop.

"As a result of the incident, six people were injured and were subsequently evacuated to Lindimara Christian Hospital in Waingapu for medical treatment," he said.

The East Sumba Sub-regional Police Chief immediately went to the scene and visited the victims at the hospital. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the accident involving the patrol car.

"Currently, our Traffic Accident Unit is conducting an investigation and processing the scene to determine the exact cause of the traffic accident," he said.
