inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Directorate of Certain Crimes at the Indonesian National Police (INP) Criminal Investigation Agency foiled an attempt to smuggle 28 tons of tin bound for Malaysia in Gantung Village, Gantung District, East Belitung Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands.
The Director of Certain Crimes of INP, Brigadier General Mohammad Irhamni, stated that the smuggling attempt was foiled when investigators raided a storage warehouse early Thursday (8/13/2026).
"The team is conducting law enforcement against illegal tin sand storage activities suspected of being smuggled to Malaysia," he said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday (8/14/2026).
During the raid, officers seized 28 tons of tin sand suspected of originating from illegal mining activities.
The 28 tons of tin consisted of 568 sacks, 97 of which were allegedly paid for and ready to be delivered.
Investigators arrested two suspects, RR and DW. The suspect, RR, is suspected of acting as an intermediary in sourcing tin sand in East Belitung, while DW acted as a tin delivery driver.
He stated that the police are currently investigating other parties involved in the illegal tin mining and smuggling chain in East Belitung.
"Meanwhile, the evidence has been secured at the East Belitung Sub-regional Police Headquarters," he said.
Previously, the Directorate of Certain Criminal Investigation of INP assisted in handling a case of alleged illegal mining and smuggling of 50 tons of tin sand in the Air Merbau area, Belitung Regency, Bangka Belitung Province.
The proceeds of the illegal tin mining were also allegedly destined for Malaysia.
