Vice Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, believes that the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) through deepfake is a digital security and ethical challenge that requires serious attention, as it has the potential to raise the threat of digital fraud.
Deepfake technology allows the creation of fake videos, images, and voices that resemble the original source, making them difficult to distinguish from reality.
"Now our voices can be imitated, our facial images can be imitated, through 'deepfake' videos generated by AI very seamlessly," said Nezar, Thursday (6/18/2026).
According to him, the development of artificial intelligence is currently very rapid, even surpassing the phase of generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) to autonomous artificial intelligence (agentic AI) and various other new technologies.
This development brings significant benefits to various sectors, but at the same time, it also creates new risks that require serious attention.
In terms of cybersecurity, he highlighted the use of AI by digital criminals to commit fraud using deepfake technology.
According to him, the results of AI-based manipulation have now developed into what is known as synthetic reality, namely digitally engineered content that is increasingly difficult to distinguish from reality.
Nezar believes that the public's low level of literacy regarding AI developments makes many people easily fooled by such manipulated content.
Furthermore, he believes that an ethical approach to AI is no longer sufficiently voluntary, as it was in the early stages of the technology's development.
Nezar emphasized that principles such as transparency, accountability, and security must be effectively implemented in the AI product development process through an ethical approach from the design stage (ethics by design).
Therefore, he encouraged developers, industry players, academics, and the AI user community to strengthen governance and risk mitigation from the planning stage.
"Transparency, accountability, and security must be present in the implementation and development of an AI product," Nezar emphasized.
