inp.polri.go.id - Nabire. An armed attack occurred on Saturday (February 21, 2026) at around 12:00 PM at the PT Kristal Kilometer 38 security post in Lagari Jaya Village, Makimi District, Nabire Regency. The incident resulted in two deaths and damage to company facilities.
The Head of the Public Relations Task Force for the Cartensz 2026 Peace Operation, Senior Superintendent Yusuf Sutejo, expressed his condolences for the deaths of the two victims.
"We express our condolences for the incident that befell the two victims. Upon receiving the report, we, along with the Nabire Sub-regional Police, immediately went to the scene to secure the area, process the crime scene, and evacuate the victims," he told the media in Nabire.
At the scene, officers found two charred bodies among the rubble of the security post, which was also on fire. The two bodies were then taken to Nabire Regional Hospital for identification and an autopsy. The victim's identity is still pending the results of a medical examination, given the body's severe burns.
In addition, authorities found a company vehicle with four bullet holes from the front. Damage was also visible on the engine radiator, which was punctured by a projectile. However, no bullet casings were found near the scene, presumably because the shooting occurred from a distance of approximately 50 to 100 meters.
From the initial investigation, investigators have interviewed four witnesses, all company employees. Based on witness statements, the attack was preceded by gunshots, and approximately three perpetrators were seen at the scene. This number is still being further investigated.
Regarding claims of responsibility circulating on social media, authorities emphasized that they would not jump to conclusions based on unverified information. The investigation process remains professional, prioritizing evidence and the results of field investigations.
"We are not basing conclusions on one-sided claims. The entire process followed procedures and is evidence-based," Yusuf emphasized.
The police are also investigating information regarding the alleged weapons theft. However, it has been confirmed that no police members are currently on duty to guard the PT location, so information regarding weapons is still under investigation.
