inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has asked the Indonesian National Police (INP) to be more vigilant in maintaining public order and security to prevent vigilante actions.

He said the increased security is primarily to prevent the rise in theft, robbery, and muggings, which have recently been on the rise in various regions.

"If the state is unable to provide a sense of security to the public, the potential for vigilante actions will also rise," Yusril stated when confirmed in Jakarta on Wednesday (7/29/2026).

According to Yusril, vigilante actions have the potential to give rise to new crimes, such as assaults on suspected perpetrators, resulting in loss of life.

He specifically highlighted the vigilante actions in Bali and Morowali, Central Sulawesi, which resulted in the deaths of suspected chicken thieves and motorcycle thieves, respectively, after being attacked by a mob.

In these incidents, he observed a lack of preventive action by law enforcement officers, allowing the mobs to freely beat the victims to death.

If this continues, he continued, such acts of neglect could escalate into serious human rights violations, requiring the state to intervene and prevent them.

In response to this situation, the Coordinating Minister stated that he would soon hold a Joint Coordination Meeting between the Coordinating Ministry for Law and Human Rights, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs to discuss coordination and synchronization in handling street crimes, particularly theft, robbery, and mugging, which are causing public concern.

He stated that the causes of street crime are many and varied. These include psychological, social, and economic factors.

"However, prevention, security, community protection, and law enforcement efforts must be carried out in a standardized, coordinated, and integrated manner," he said.

However, he believes that addressing this problem cannot be done by law enforcement alone, but requires the involvement of various ministries and institutions.

To that end, he will invite all ministries, agencies, and law enforcement officials to work together to address this problem.
