– Jakarta. Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD stated that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed the Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, the Chief of Indonesian National Police (INP), to take strong action against those who shield criminals involved in human trafficking (TPPO).

The Minister highlighted that the protection provided by these individuals frequently obstructs efforts to prevent and combat human trafficking in Indonesia. Moreover, bureaucratic challenges further compound the issue.

“We often identify the nodes but face hindrances due to bureaucratic obstacles, and possibly also due to backing and so on,” he said as quoted by Antara on Tuesday (30/5/23).

He emphasized that the President made it clear that there should be no protection granted in any form when it comes to human trafficking. It was underscored that the responsibility to uphold the truth lies with the state.

“The backing for law enforcement comes from the state,” he concluded.
