Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Papua Regional Police confirmed on Monday (18/5/2026) that 874 residents have been displaced following an intercommunal conflict in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Mountains, as authorities move to contain the violence.
The displaced citizens are currently seeking shelter across several secure locations, including the Jayawijaya Police Headquarters, the local military command, and various churches.
"Various efforts are currently underway to prevent the conflict from expanding further and causing casualties," said Papua Police Head of Public Relations Senior Superintendent Cahyo Sukarnito, as cited by antaranews.com.
He urged unaffected residents to return home and cautioned the public against being provoked by rumors.
To ensure security, the Papua Police have deployed a company-level unit from the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) across seven strategic points. Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Ribka Haluk confirmed that the situation in Wamena has gradually improved, allowing public services and daily community activities to return to normal.
