inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Vice Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria encouraged digital platforms to establish fair cooperation with news publishers regarding the use of news content in artificial intelligence (AI)-based search engines.
Nezar believes that the AI Overview feature in search engines is capable of collecting, summarizing, and simplifying various sources, making it easier for people to find information. However, on the other hand, this feature causes disruption to the media industry.
"This disruption has caused a massive decline in traffic for digital media, and the decline has reached 40 to 70 percent for media sites. This ultimately has an impact on business because traffic has decreased, automatically causing advertising and revenue to decrease," explained Nezar, Tuesday (2/24/2026).
Not only summarizing, the latest developments in AI also enable the technology to perform reasoning, analysis, and predictions based on data. This condition is considered to further reduce user traffic to information source sites.
According to Nezarl, the presence of AI features in search engines cannot be entirely blamed because they aim to optimize the information search process.
However, he emphasized the need for negotiations between platforms and content providers regarding copyright, considering that the material summarized by AI is sourced from journalistic works by news publishers.
"I think the key lies in the discussion about copyright. After all, these content publishers have the right to have their work legally protected," said Nezar.
