inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) commends the Indonesian National Police (INP) for their commitment to uncovering the main actors behind the forest and land fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
Enforcement should not stop at perpetrators in the field, but must also target those who control and profit from the land burning practices.
House Commission III Chairman Habiburokhman stated that perpetrators caught in the field often act only as workers or victims carrying out orders. Meanwhile, the corporations and financiers behind these activities often escape prosecution.
Therefore, he believes the "follow the money" approach needs to be seriously implemented to uncover the flow of profits and trace the intellectual actors behind the forest and land fires.
"This ‘follow the money’ approach and firm, indiscriminate action are in line with the agenda of equitable law enforcement reform," Habiburokhman said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday (8/25/2026).
He believes that handling forest and land fires must address the root of the problem. Those who profit financially from the burning land must also be held accountable, so that law enforcement not only deters perpetrators on the ground.
In addition to supporting enforcement measures, Habiburokhman commended the INP's preventative efforts. One of these is the construction of 1,296 reservoirs and 834 canal blocks in several areas deemed prone to forest and land fires.
He assessed that this infrastructure development demonstrates the INP's commitment to implementing President Prabowo Subianto's instruction to maximize efforts to prevent and manage forest and land fires.
"The construction of this water infrastructure is a concrete manifestation of precision work, the benefits of which are immediately felt in mitigating the annual haze disaster," he said.
Habiburokhman emphasized that Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) will continue to oversee the National Police's efforts in handling forest and land fires, both through law enforcement against those who damage the environment and strengthening sustainable mitigation measures.
According to him, these efforts are crucial for protecting the public from the threat of haze disasters while preserving the environmental ecosystem.
