inp.polri.go.id - Batam. The Riau Islands Regional Police General Criminal Investigation Directorate III uncovered a case of aggravated theft of a public facility, a drainage cover, in Pelita Tunnel, Sungai Panas Village, Batam Kota District, Batam City.
In this case, officers apprehended a perpetrator identified as SF along with several pieces of evidence.
The Head of Public Relations of the Riau Islands Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Nona Pricillia Ohei, stated that the case's disclosure demonstrates their commitment to maintaining public order and security used for the benefit of the wider community.
"The perpetrator was successfully apprehended after the Operational Team conducted a series of investigations based on information and reports from the public. The perpetrator's actions not only caused material losses but also potentially endangered the safety of the public and road users because the stolen facility was part of public infrastructure," said Nona, Wednesday (6/17/2026).
The Director of General Criminal Investigation of the Riau Islands Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Ronni Bonic, added that the perpetrator carried out his actions by damaging the concrete structure of the drainage cover using an iron hammer until the iron frame came loose.
The iron was then transported by motorized rickshaw and taken to the perpetrator's house to be sold to a scrap metal collector.
From the investigation, officers secured evidence in the form of one motorized rickshaw, one iron hammer, a stack of iron drainage cover frames weighing approximately 10 kilograms, one black shirt, and one pair of dark blue jeans.
As a result of the perpetrator's actions, BP Batam suffered losses due to the loss of nine drainage covers, estimated at IDR 6,300,000.
"For his actions, the perpetrator is suspected of violating Article 477 Paragraph (1) Letter f of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP) concerning aggravated theft of goods intended for the public interest, which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years," explained the Director of Criminal Investigation of the Riau Islands Regional Police.
