Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Damai Cartenz Peace Task Force has confirmed the death of an employee from PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) following a suspected shooting by an armed criminal group (KKB) in the Grasberg highland area of Tembagapura, Mimika, on Wednesday morning (11/3/2026).

"We have received reports regarding a shooting incident on Wednesday resulting in the fatality of a PT Freeport employee, and our personnel are currently conducting an investigation to identify the perpetrators," said Brigadier General Faizal Rahmadani, Head of Operations for the Damai Cartenz Task Force, as cited by antaranews.com

The victim, identified as Simson Mulia, was traveling in a vehicle with a colleague to inspect a work area at the former Grasberg open-pit mine when the attack occurred at approximately 08:30 WIT. Simson sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head, while his colleague survived with minor injuries after jumping from the vehicle.

In response to the incident, the Amole Task Force, responsible for PTFI's vital asset security, has deployed additional personnel to the highland region to secure the site. Security measures have been intensified across all Freeport operational areas, spanning from the lowlands of Timika to the high-altitude mining sectors, to prevent further escalations.
