Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo announced plans on Monday (18/5/2026) to establish a new public boxing arena in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta to curb municipal youth brawls, known locally as tawuran. by providing high-energy teenagers with a supervised outlet for their physical energy and aggression.
The decision was inspired directly by the newly inaugurated community boxing ring built beneath the Pasar Rebo flyover in Ciracas, East Jakarta, which has been operational since January 2026.
"Because this facility already exists in Ciracas, I spontaneously decided we will build another one just like it in Kampung Melayu," Governor Pramono said during his visit to the Pasar Rebo location on Monday afternoon, as cited by antaranews.com.
According to regional data provided by the East Jakarta Mayor, local street brawls have noticeably decreased since the underpass was converted into a sports zone.
The existing 247-square-meter facility features a standard 9.5-meter by 9.5-meter boxing ring managed collaboratively by municipal authorities and professional boxing communities.
To maintain accessibility and prevent illegal levies, public access to the training grounds will remain completely free of charge, though the administration plans to allocate resources to support local coaches for long-term athletic development. Moving forward, Governor Pramono expressed intentions to duplicate this community-led sports framework across other high-risk neighborhoods throughout the capital.
