The Jakarta Metro Jaya Regional Police reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the constitutional right of free expression while urging student groups not to stage demonstrations at Bundaran Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout to protect public facilities, economic activity, and the rights of road users.

Metro Jaya Police Head of Public Relations Senior Superintendent Budi Hermanto explained that demonstrations in Jakarta must comply with regulations, including Governor Regulation No. 232/2015 and Law No. 9/1998 on Freedom of Public Expression. These laws require balancing the rights of demonstrators with those of the wider public.

“Bundaran HI roundabout is a vital hub for traffic, public transport, and economic activity. Concentrating mass gatherings there risks paralyzing mobility and disrupting essential services,” he said on Friday (1/6/2026).

Chief Budi highlighted alternative official venues for demonstrations such as Silang Selatan Monas, Parkir Timur Senayan, and Alun-Alun Demokrasi at the House of Represntatives (DPR) complex. These locations are designed to accommodate large crowds without disrupting city infrastructure.

He assured that officers will continue to apply preventive, humanist approaches in managing demonstrations, emphasizing communication and respect for citizens’ rights. The public is encouraged to follow traffic advisories and report potential disturbances via Polri’s emergency Call Center 110.
