inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Prof. Juanda, Expert Advisor to the Chief of Police for Constitutional Law, commended the Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police for uncovering 127 street crimes between May 1 and 22, 2026. These uncovered crimes resulted in the arrest of 173 suspects.
Juanda expressed his appreciation during a press conference on street crime disclosure at the Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police on Friday (5/22/2026). He assessed that the police's actions in handling street crimes are part of the police's obligation to maintain public order and security.
"When the interests of the wider community are disturbed, the police must be present. That is part of their duty to protect, serve, and enforce the law," Juanda said.
Juanda stated that street crimes such as aggravated theft, theft with violence, and motor vehicle theft directly impact the public's sense of security. Therefore, he believes that action against perpetrators must be taken firmly and measuredly.
He explained that the police's duty to maintain public order and security has a clear legal basis. This is regulated in Article 30 paragraph 4 of the 1945 Constitution and Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the Indonesian National Police.
"The Police Law also stipulates the police's authority to take police action, including discretion, as long as it is carried out within the law and does not conflict with human rights," he said.
Juanda emphasized that all police actions must remain professional and accountable. He stated that law enforcement must not deviate from the principles of legality, proportionality, and the protection of human rights.
He assessed that the disclosure of 127 street crime cases by the Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police demonstrates the state's presence in providing protection to the public. Moreover, street crimes often cause unrest because they occur in public spaces and target everyday activities.
"Law enforcement must be firm, but still measured. I see the steps taken by the police in this disclosure as an effort to protect the wider community," he said.
