inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Police have uncovered the suspected motive behind the attempted kidnapping of an elderly man with the initials GH (70) in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area of ​​Penjaringan, North Jakarta. 

The incident, which was captured on CCTV and caused a public outcry, was allegedly sparked by a romantic dispute.

This discovery came to light after investigators arrested two men suspected of involvement in the incident. The two suspects are CW (31) and FAP (26).

Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police, Senior Superintendent Budi Hermanto, stated that, based on preliminary investigation results, one of the perpetrators was said to have had a relationship with the victim's family. 

This relationship was allegedly not approved, triggering personal issues that led to allegations of criminal activity.

"Based on preliminary investigation results, the incident is suspected to have been motivated by personal issues or an unapproved romantic relationship," he explained on Monday (6/15/2026).

He explained that both perpetrators have been named suspects and are undergoing further questioning at the Penjaringan Sector Metropolitan Police.

In addition to arresting the perpetrators, the police also confiscated several pieces of evidence, including a white Toyota Fortuner, CCTV footage, a cell phone, a screwdriver, and the clothing the suspects were wearing at the time of the incident.

"Both have been detained and are currently undergoing further investigation," he said.

For their actions, CW and FAP have been charged under Article 450 and/or Article 471 of the Indonesian Criminal Code concerning kidnapping and/or assault, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.
