inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) stated that President Prabowo Subianto is encouraging the development of productive shrimp and fish ponds to strengthen national protein self-sufficiency.
"The shrimp harvest from the region will be directed primarily to meet domestic needs as part of strengthening protein self-sufficiency," said Zulhas on Monday (5/25/2026).
President Prabowo previously inspected the shrimp harvest at the Region-Based Shrimp Farm in Kebumen, Central Java, on Saturday (5/23/2026).
The government positions the shrimp harvest as part of efforts to strengthen the public's protein supply while also opening up export opportunities.
In addition to the shrimp pond area in Kebumen, President Prabowo is also promoting the development of 2,000 hectares of shrimp ponds in Waingapu and 200 hectares in Gorontalo.
The government is also preparing to develop 14,000 hectares of fish ponds on the north coast of West Java. The shrimp pond in Tegal Retno Village, Kebumen, covers 65 hectares and houses 206 ponds.
The area is managed by the Public Service Agency (BLU) of the Directorate General of Aquaculture, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and has been under construction for approximately three years.
Zulhas stated that each hectare of pond is targeted to produce around 40 tons of shrimp. With a price of around IDR 70,000 per kilogram, the area is targeted to produce up to 960 tons per cycle, or around 1,920 tons per year.
"The production value of these ponds reaches approximately IDR 67.2 billion per cycle, or IDR 134.4 billion per year, employing approximately 650 local workers," said the Coordinating Minister for Food.
According to data from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the export value of Indonesian fishery products reached US$6.27 billion, with shrimp contributing approximately US$1.87 billion, or nearly 30 percent of total national fishery exports.
The government considers the aquaculture sector to be a crucial pillar in strengthening food security and increasing foreign exchange earnings. After achieving self-sufficiency in rice, corn, eggs, chicken, and fish, the government is directing the development of shrimp and fish ponds to strengthen protein self-sufficiency.
