inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Commission for the Acceleration of Indonesian National Police (INP) Reform has stated that it does not recommend the formation of a new security ministry to oversee the police institution. It considers the proposal to have more disadvantages (harm) than advantages.
"We have agreed that we are not proposing the formation of a new ministry which the President asked, and we explained. Our conclusion is that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, we no longer need to propose it," said the Chairman of the Commission for the Acceleration of INP Reform, Jimly Asshiddiqie, in a press conference at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (5/5/2026).
After hearing the explanation from the commission, President Prabowo Subianto is said to have agreed not to establish the ministry. The President also agreed to maintain the current method for appointing the INP Chief.
Jimly revealed that some members of the commission believe that the appointment of the INP Chief does not require confirmation or approval from the House of Representatives (DPR).
"Some of us were of the opinion that the police institution should remain the same. After discussing the pros and cons, the President directed that it remain as it is. Therefore, the INP Chief will continue to be appointed by the President with the approval of the House of Representatives (DPR), as is the current practice for both the police chief and the military commander," he explained.
