Inp.polri.go.id - Bogor. President Prabowo Subianto reiterated on Sunday (22/3/2026) that industrial downstreaming remains a non-negotiable requirement for all investment cooperation with the United States, mandating that raw materials must be processed domestically to maximize national economic value.
"We are open to foreign investment in critical minerals, but everything must be at market price and follow our processing regulations," he said, as cited by antaranews.com.
The President emphasized that while Indonesia seeks to lower trade barriers through the Reciprocal Trade Agreement, it will not sacrifice sovereignty over strategic resources like palm oil and coffee.
Under the new deal, 1,819 Indonesian commodities will gain zero-percent tariff access to the U.S. market. However, President Prabowo clarified that the government maintains a unique adjustment clause, allowing Indonesia to renegotiate or exit any agreement that threatens national interests, a flexibility he noted is not granted to other nations.
