inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, called on the entire nation to maintain unity in the face of the recent emergence of hoax narratives aimed at discrediting the legislative body.

In the digital space, she said, the rapid flow of information has increased disinformation, exacerbated polarization, and blurred the lines between constructive criticism and divisive provocation.

"This phenomenon is also marked by the circulation of various hoaxes and manipulated information, including content suspected of being deliberately produced or disseminated to discredit the DPR RI," Puan said during her speech at the closing plenary session at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/21/2026).

She addressed several cases of hoaxes about the DPR RI, including hoaxes in the form of fake quotes purporting to be from the DPR RI leadership or members, hoaxes about the DPR RI rejecting the deliberation/ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill, and hoaxes using old videos with new, out-of-context narratives.

These narratives, she said, pit the Indonesian Legislative Body against the people, making it seem as if the two are in opposing positions.

This, she argued, could erode public trust in representative institutions, weaken the legitimacy of democratic institutions, and hinder the creation of rational and constructive public dialogue.

Therefore, she emphasized the importance of the Indonesian nation returning to its national foundations. She argued that maintaining national unity does not mean eliminating criticism, but rather ensuring that every criticism leads to improvements in national life.

"United in building Indonesia and ensuring that the nation's progress can be felt by all the people, not just a small group," Puan said.
