Riau Regional Police Vice Chief, Brigadier General Hengki Haryadi, emphasized that in addition to violating the law, illegal gold mining activities also pose a serious threat to the environment, particularly in the Kuantan River basin.

"Our approach is not only repressive, but also uses a green policing strategy, prioritizing education and prevention to prevent the public from engaging in these illegal activities," he said on Thursday (4/23/2026).

He emphasized that there is no room and tolerance for illegal mining activities in Riau Province. He stated that enforcement efforts will continue consistently, accompanied by environmental restoration measures.

"This is our commitment. Law enforcement is continuing, but efforts to protect the environment are also an integral part," he explained.

Hengki added that the illegal mining has caused significant and widespread environmental damage, ranging from water pollution to the degradation of river ecosystems. Therefore, resolving the illegal mining problem cannot be solely the responsibility of the police, but must involve all stakeholders in an integrated manner.

According to Hengki, the role of customary institutions is also considered strategic. Dubalang, as guardians of living law or customary law, play a crucial role in preserving local wisdom.

"In local customary norms, damaging the environment is an intolerable offense, so it is hoped that a customary approach will strengthen the community's collective awareness to protect nature," he said.
