inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Head of the Indonesian National Police (INP) Traffic Corps, Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, emphasized that traffic police officers must become "heroes" by being more active in the field to reduce the number of traffic accidents.

This was conveyed by Agus while giving instructions to the personnel regarding the operational transformation of traffic functions.

He highlighted the high number of traffic accidents throughout 2025, which reached around 158,000 traffic accidents, with nearly 24,000 fatalities.

Although the fatality rate decreased in 2026, Agus emphasized that this situation should not be taken for granted. According to him, road safety must be a top priority for all traffic police officers.

“If the number of traffic accidents is high, whatever you did becomes meaningless. The most important thing is to save lives. We must suppress the number of accidents," he stressed.

Agus also dismissed the notion that the increasing number of accidents was due to the increasing number of vehicles or population growth. He emphasized that traffic safety must be managed seriously through preventive and educational measures.

He mentioned that the United Nations (UN) has set a target of reducing the fatality rate by 50 percent, which must be a concern for all countries, including Indonesia.

As a concrete step, the INP Traffic Corps is implementing the "Police Greet and Serve" program under the direction of the INP Chief.

The program focuses on a humane approach to the community, especially motorcycle riders, who are the most vulnerable group to accidents.

"Most accidents involve motorcycles. The users are clear: young people and students; this is what we must focus on," he concluded.
