The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’s Geological Agency called on the public to avoid approaching areas within a 2.5-kilometer radius of Mount Karangetang's main crater in Sitaro Regency, North Sulawesi, as the volcano has been raised to a level III (alert) status.
“Visitors, tourists, and hikers are prohibited from approaching areas within 2.5 kilometers of the main crater (south) and the secondary crater (north), as well as 3.5 kilometers in the southwest, south, and southeast sectors, said Muhammad Wafid AN, the Head of the Energey Ministry’s Geological Agency, on Sunday (24/11/2024).
The government also advised local residents to wear masks to protect against respiratory issues caused by potential ash falls.
The volcanic activity has been under continuous monitoring by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). Authorities also warned communities living along rivers originating from the volcano to remain alert for potential lahars and flash floods.
