Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesian National Police (INP) Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo expected that the newly established Directorate for the Protection of Women and Children (PPA) and the Eradication of Human Trafficking (PPO) under the INP Criminal Investigation Agency will significantly reduce violence against women and children.
Speaking at the launch event for the new directorate, held in conjunction with the "Gender Mainstreaming Insight: Equality in Action, Insight in Policy" seminar on Tuesday (17/12/2024), he highlighted discrepancies in handling such cases.
According to National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan)’s data, there were 401,975 cases of violence against women and 15,120 cases against children. However, the police have handled only 105,475 cases, with the majority involving domestic violence, followed by sexual abuse, physical and psychological violence, and rape.
“This indicates a significant gap between the cases recorded by the national commission and those handled by the police," Chief Sigit said, adding that some cases are still resolved inappropriately, such as marrying the victim to the perpetrator.
He emphasized the need for firm and just measures to address violence against women and children effectively.
"We must ensure that solutions align with the victims' needs and do not create additional problems for them," Chief Sigit said, as reported by antaranews.com.
