Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Jakarta is set to develop a "Giant Mangrove Wall" along its northern coast to combat tidal flooding, coastal erosion, and land subsidence. The project will integrate mangrove forests with the ongoing construction of an 11.2-kilometer seawall.
Governor-elect Pramono Anung emphasized the urgency of this initiative, citing the rapid decline of Jakarta’s mangrove forests, according to antaranews.com.
“Like it or not, Jakarta needs mangroves,” he said during a planting event at Angke Kapuk Protected Forest on Wednesday (5/2/2025).
The plan includes planting 5,000 mangrove trees in the 200-hectare conservation area, which will serve as a natural buffer against environmental threats. Authorities will also ensure ongoing maintenance to maximize the trees’ protective benefits.
A survey by the Ministry of Environment found that Jakarta has lost over 50% of its mangroves in the past 30 years. With land subsidence worsening, officials stress that restoring these forests is essential to protecting the city’s coastline.
