Inp.polri.go.id - Meulaboh. The Aceh administration is committed to eliminating the practice of shackling people with mentall illness, locally known as pasung, by the end of 2025, ensuring no people with mental disorders are subjected to this practice.

“Our goal is to end pasung in Aceh this year. We are ready to assist local administrations in identifying and treating people with mental disorders,” said Hanif, the Director of Aceh Mental Hospital, on Sunday (9/2/2025).

According to hospital records, Aceh has 21,000 people with mental disorders, half of whom suffer from severe conditions. Currently, 114 people with mental disorders in Aceh remain shackled.

To support recovery, the Aceh administration has set up a rehabilitation center in Kuta Malaka, Aceh Besar, where patients receive treatment and vocational training to reintegrate into society.

Acting Governor Safrizal launched the Stop Pasung program, stressing that shackling only worsens mental illness. 

“Pasung is not a solution—it only makes things worse. We must end this practice for the sake of humanity,” he said, urging local leaders to report remaining cases for immediate intervention.
