Inp.polri.go.id - Batam. Barelang Sub-regional Police in Riau Islands have foiled the illegal departure of 24 Indonesian migrant workers between October and November 2024.

The workers were attempting to leave the country without proper documentation, according to antaranews.com.

Barelang Police Chief Senior Superintendent Heribertus Ompusunggu confirmed the operation, explaining that four reports had been filed from Batam's Ferry Terminal and Hang Nadim Airport.

"We collaborated with BP3MI and Immigration Office to investigate these cases," he said, referring to the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Center.

Six suspects were arrested, including recruiters and those responsible for facilitating the illegal migration. The suspects promised high-paying jobs abroad with no upfront costs for the victims.

Chief Ompusunggu also said that ten victims were rescued during the operation, while 14 others, who planned to travel independently, were saved as well. The workers came from several regions, including West Java, West Sumatra, and East Java.

The suspects face charges under the Migrant Worker Protection Law, with penalties of up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to Rp 15 billion.
