Indonesian National Police (INP) Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo emphasized the need to resolve the recent Rempang Island issue through deliberation in consultation forums involving the community, BP Batam, and the central government "We are prioritizing persuasive actions to address the relocation issue, following the president's direction," he stated in Jakarta on Thursday (14/9/23). The INP Chief highlighted that the Eco City project, a part of the National Strategic Projects, in Rempang Island aims to create new jobs, particularly for Batam residents, with significant benefits for Indonesia. "Rempang Island will be developed as a PSN, offering extensive employment opportunities and significant benefits for Batam and Indonesia, including foreign exchange," he explained, referring to National Strategic Projects. General Sigit said that anticipation measures have been ongoing as additional company-level units (SSK) have been deployed to Rempang Island. He said that that local community about relocation had been informed about the plan. However, misunderstandings led to protests, resulting in clashes. (ar/ay/hn/nm)
