inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Farmers are being urged to begin adapting their cropping patterns and farming methods to the increasingly pronounced climate change. Adaptation is considered crucial for maintaining agricultural productivity and national food security.

IPB University climatology expert Prof. Rizaldi Boer stated that farmers need to utilize technology and climate information to determine planting times and strategies.

"Farmers must have strategies and adaptations such as accelerating planting, implementing climate-savvy farming practices, using dry-land planting fertilizers, and so on," Rizaldi said when contacted in Jakarta on Thursday (8/27/2026).

According to him, the current El Niño phenomenon has the potential to impact the 2026-2027 planting season. One impact is a shift in the start of the rainy season, which could delay planting times.

This change will not only affect the first planting season but also has the potential to shift the start of the second planting season compared to previous years.

"I have already said there will be a delay in the start of the rainy season, and this will impact the first and second planting seasons," he said.

Therefore, Rizaldi urged farmers to more actively monitor climate developments and adjust their agricultural strategies. Steps that can be taken include accelerating planting times, selecting appropriate seed varieties, and utilizing weather and climate forecast information.
