Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs threw its weight behind student encampments as a method for expressing support for Palestinian independence, similar to those seen in the United States.

Indah Nurvia Savitri, the Director of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, emphasized on Friday (2/8/2024) that while protests alone may not achieve Palestinian independence, they raise awareness about the Israel-Palestine conflict.

These encampments can spark global boycott movements and urge universities to reconsider investments in companies supporting Israel's actions, according to antaranews.com.

Student encampments, which have successfully driven change in Indonesia in the past, such as the 1998 reform protests and recent university fee demonstrations, are gaining traction among pro-Palestinian students globally.

Initiated by Columbia University in April 2024, similar protests have spread to Chicago, Norway, Sweden, London, and Berlin, where students camp out on campuses urging divestment from companies aiding Israeli attacks on Gaza.
