Inp.polri.go.id - Pekanbaru. Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq revealed on Saturday (25/4/2026), that national forest and land fires have already consumed 52,000 hectares this year.

This figure represented a significant increase compared to the same period in 2025, with Riau and West Kalimantan identified as the most heavily impacted regions.

"We cannot imagine the costs if we are unprepared. With rising fuel prices driven by global geopolitical uncertainty, early detection and mutual cooperation are essential for cost efficiency," Minister Hanif said, as cited by antaranews.com..

Speaking after a coordination meeting at PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan in Pekanbaru, he cited a prolonged dry season and dropping peatland water levels as the primary drivers of the escalation. To combat the spread, the government is implementing two major strategies: Weather Modification Operations (TMC) led by the BNPB and BMKG, and the construction of additional canal blocks to maintain peat hydration.

He urged local administrations, the military, and the police to activate all units at the grassroots level to prevent further environmental damage.
