inp.polri.go.id - East Kalimantan. The East Kalimantan Regional Police's Narcotics Directorate, along with the Balikpapan Sub-regional City Police, conducted a raid in Gunung Bugis area of West Balikpapan District, known as a high-risk area for drug trafficking.

During the operation, officers questioned dozens of individuals. Of the 58 individuals who underwent urine tests, 48 tested positive for drugs, while 10 others tested negative.

Police also apprehended two individuals suspected of possessing methamphetamine and a resident found in possession of a sharp weapon.

This operation is part of the Drug Den Operation, which is being carried out simultaneously throughout Indonesia.

The operation aims to suppress drug distribution and abuse by taking action against dealers, distributors, couriers, and users, as well as preventing the possession of sharp weapons.

The Director of Narcotics Investigation at the East Kalimantan Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Romylus Tamtelahitu, explained that the raid in Gunung Bugis involved joint personnel from several police functional units.

According to Romylus, the operation was a follow-up to a central government directive targeting various regions across Indonesia. In East Kalimantan, similar operations were carried out in 10 regencies and cities.

He stated that on-site investigations indicated dozens of individuals were suspected of using narcotics. However, each individual was handled based on their findings and the results of their respective investigations.

Two individuals suspected of carrying methamphetamine are now under the attention of investigators for further processing in accordance with applicable law.

Both individuals are said to be potentially charged under Article 114 of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning narcotics, with the application of the article to be determined based on the results of the investigation.

Meanwhile, 48 individuals who tested positive through urine tests but found no evidence of narcotics will undergo further assessment. This process will determine appropriate steps, including the possibility of undergoing rehabilitation in accordance with legal provisions.

Romylus emphasized that individuals suspected of being users will not necessarily be treated the same as those found involved in drug trafficking.

A recovery approach is one of the key steps prioritized in addressing drug abuse.
