inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Head of the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, said that flood disasters are not always caused by heavy rain, moderate rain intensity can also trigger floods.

In her statement, Dwikorita mentioned that environmental factors and drainage systems greatly affect the potential for flooding in an area. Areas with poor drainage are more prone to inundation, even though rainfall is not too high.

"It should be noted that flooding does not have to be heavy rain, moderate rain can also cause flooding. It depends on the drainage system and environmental conditions," she said.

Dwikorita noted that on November 18-23, 2024, several regions are predicted to potentially experience moderate to heavy rain. These regions include Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Papua.

In Sumatra, the potential for moderate to heavy rain occurs in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Lampung, Bengkulu, and Bangka Belitung are also reminded to be aware of the possibility of flooding.

In Java, moderate rain has the potential to hit Banten, Jakarta, and West Java, while East Java is predicted to experience heavy rain. Areas with good drainage can reduce the risk of flooding even though rainfall is quite high.

Papua, especially Papua Mountains, Central Papua, and South Papua, are also predicted to experience moderate rain. BMKG appeals to the public to be more concerned about the environment in order to reduce the impact of flooding.
