Inp.polri.go.id - Medan. Nine people have been confirmed dead, and one remains missing following a landslide in Semangat Gunung Village, Merdeka District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra.

The disaster occurred on Saturday evening, causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.

“As of now, nine victims have been found dead, and we are searching for one missing person,” said Panji Surianto, the Head of Emergency and Logistics at the Karo Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), on Monday (25/11/2024).

Initially, four bodies were recovered shortly after the landslide, and five additional victims were found on Sunday. The missing individual, identified as Jihan Selviani, 23, remains unaccounted for.

The landslide also destroyed two homes, an inn, and a place of worship. Farmland and fisheries in the area suffered significant damage, and the main road connecting Semangat Gunung Village to Doulu Village has been completely blocked.

Efforts to clear debris and search for the missing are ongoing, involving local authorities and heavy equipment.  Two landslide sites have been cleared, and access to suspected victim locations has been restored..

The BPBD urges residents to stay vigilant as weather conditions remain unstable.
