inp.polri.go.id - Kudus. The Kudus Sub-regional Police, Central Java, are targeting drivers who smoke while driving as part of the focus of Operation Patuh Candi 2026, an effort to raise public awareness of traffic safety.

"There have been quite a lot of public complaints about drivers smoking while driving, so we are making this as part of our focus operation," said Kudus Sub-regional Police Chief, Superintendent Wahyu Sulistyo, while leading a roll call for Operation Patuh Candi 2026 troops at the Wicaksana Laghawa Police Headquarters on Monday (10/26/2026).

According to him, smoking while driving has the potential to disrupt other driver concentration and endanger safety, both for themselves and other road users.

Therefore, the public is urged to refrain from activities that could distract them while driving and to always prioritize road safety.

In addition to these behaviors, the police are also targeting a number of visible traffic violations, including driving against traffic, not wearing a helmet, using a vehicle that does not meet technical specifications, and riding a motorcycle with three passengers.

Beyond enforcement on the roads, the police is also intensifying outreach programs in schools to instill awareness of traffic discipline from an early age, especially among students who are starting to actively use vehicles in their daily activities.

Operation Patuh Candi 2026 will run for 14 days, from October 26 to November 8, 2026. Through this operation, the police aim to improve public discipline in traffic while reducing the number of accidents.

Wahyu also highlighted the persistently high number of traffic accidents in his jurisdiction. Throughout 2025, 1,127 accidents were recorded. Meanwhile, as of September 2026, the number of accidents reached 906.

According to him, the development of transportation in the digital era and modernization needs to be balanced with increased public awareness of complying with traffic regulations. Violations that are often considered trivial can lead to accidents and endanger the safety of other road users.

"Ignored traffic violations can lead to accidents. Therefore, enforcement is necessary for violations that have the potential to cause accidents," he said.

He hopes that Operation Patuh Candi 2026 will improve public discipline, reduce the number of violations and accidents, and improve traffic security, safety, order, and smoothness in Kudus Regency.
