The seven suspects are V (41), N alias E (29), F (27), J (26), Y (23), T (25), and R alias C (43). According to the police, C alias R, is the mastermind of the murder.
The Yogyakarta Sub-regional City Police Chief, Senior Superintendent Aditya Surya Darma said that the cruel actions against the two students on Wednesday (10/23/2024) night were related to a previous incident that occurred on Tuesday (10/22/2024) night in the same area.
Police revealed that the incident began when a witness named Bimo and his friend were hanging out in a cafe in Prawirotaman, Yogyakarta City on Tuesday night.
At around 01.30 am, suspect E and his 15 friends were about to go into the same cafe, but decided not to and instead went into a liquor outlet, not far from the cafe.
Because he knew E, Bimo and his friend then met E in front of the liquor outlet. The two were then locked into an argument, where Bimo was assaulted by E.
Bimo was then evacuated by his friends to the cafe, but E and his friend followed and ransacked the place.
“They ransacked the place with a machete and their bare hands. Due to their actions, four chairs were broken, one glass table destroyed, and a laptop was also damaged,” said the police.
Seeing Bimo was assaulted, his friends tried to help and broke up the fight, but instead, they were also attacked by E and his group.
The following night, R alias C came into the scene and sought revenge on Bimo. R had gathered his men to mess up the place and Bimo.
Unfortunately, two students of Al-Munawwir Islamic Boarding School came across and assaulted by R without knowing what just happened.
"The two were attacked by a group of unknown people using blunt objects such as wooden blocks and helmets. They were assaulted and kicked as they shout 'this is the person, this is the person' and some could be heard saying 'kill them, kill them'," explained the Police Chief.
The victim with the initials MA (23) suffered bruises on his head and a broken right thumb, while the victim SF (19) suffered a stab wound suspected to be from a sharp weapon.
"The victims were able to save themselves with the help of local residents. They were taken to the Pratama Hospital for further treatment," said Aditya.
From this incident, the police confiscated a number of pieces of evidence, including a broken chair, several pieces of broken glass, a laptop, a wooden block, a helmet visor, and an iron chair.
"We are still investigating the motive, whether this was spontaneously influenced by alcohol or perhaps there were other motives," said the Police Chief.
The seven people who have been named as suspects are being charged with Article 170 of the Criminal Code and/or 351 of the Criminal Code with a maximum prison sentence of five years.
