inp.polri.go.id - Banjarmasin. Police have named four suspects in the sinking of the Virgo Transport 8 in the Java Sea on September 13, 2026. The four are members of the ship's captain and the ship's management.

The suspects were named by a joint investigative team from the South Kalimantan Regional Police, led by the Director of Special Criminal Investigation of the South Kalimantan Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Sigit Haryono.

"The four suspects are the captain, the agent from PT Virgo Karya Shipping, the branch manager, and the operational manager," said Sigit in Banjarmasin, Friday (10/2/2026).

Sigit did not specify the identities of the four suspects. The case has now been handed over to the Sub-Directorate of Law Enforcement of the Water Unit Corps of the Indonesian National Police (INP) for further investigation.

The captain has been detained by police at the South Kalimantan Regional Police's Water and Air Unit Directorate. The other three suspects have been issued summonses for questioning as suspects.

According to Sigit, the transfer of the case to INP Water and Air Unit Directorate was intended to expedite the investigation process. This is because investigators still need to question several parties outside of South Kalimantan.

The Virgo Transport 8 was sailing from Surabaya to Banjarmasin before sinking in the Java Sea on September 13, 2026.

In the incident, Basarnas evacuated 186 of the 243 passengers and crew on board. Of those, 108 were found safe, while 78 died.

To date, the search for 57 victims remains ongoing.

The naming of four suspects is part of the legal process to investigate the cause and identify those responsible for the sinking of the Virgo Transport 8.
