Inp.polri.go.id - Pekanbaru. A gas pipeline owned by PT Trans Gas Indonesia (TGI), a subsidiary of state gas company PT PGN, exploded and caught fire in Indragiri Hilir, Riau, on Friday afternoon (2/1/2026), forcing police to halt traffic on the vital Eastern Trans-Sumatra Road as a safety measure.
Indragiri Hilir Sub-regional Police Chief Superintendent Farouk Oktora said officers immediately secured the site.
“Our personnel are already on location, and road users traveling between Riau and Jambi are advised to stop temporarily while safety measures are enforced,” he said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The explosion occurred around 4.35 pm local time in Nibul Hamlet, Batu Ampar Village, Kemuning Sub-district, sending flames up to 15 meters high. Police coordinated with the gas company to cut off the pipeline flow and manage the crisis.
Traffic was diverted, and residents were warned to stay away from the area. No casualties were reported, as the pipeline is located about 500 meters from the nearest settlement. Authorities continue monitoring conditions amid heavy rain.
