Riau Island Regional Police and Barelang Police have arrested 43 suspects due to an assault against security officers and vandalism during the riot in front of Batam BP office. “There are 43 from the rally of cancelling the relocation in front of Batam BP that we have arrested. 28 of them have been arrested by Barelang Police, while the other 15 have been detained by the Riau Island Police,” said Barelang Police Grand Commissioner Nugroho Tri N, Tuesday morning. All the suspects are men and they immediately underwent a urine test to identify if they are under the influence of narcotics during the riot. From the 28 suspect that have been arrested by Barelang Police, five are positive under the influence of drugs with three using weed and two indicated using methamphetamine. Previously, government has laid out plans to relocate 16 locations at Kampung Tua in Rempang Island, Batam city. The plan was heavily rejected by the locals with hundreds of them joined in rally turned riot. Many security personnel suffered injuries while trying to disperse the riot. Nugroho stated that 22 joint security personnel were injured with two of them have to be evacuated to hospitals.
