Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. Joint military and police forces are currently evacuating employees of PT Kristalin Nabire, including 26 Chinese workers, following a fatal insurgent raid at a gold mining site in Legari, Central Papua.
The evacuation was triggered by an attack orchestrated by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) led by Aibon Kogoya, which resulted in at least two confirmed fatalities at the company’s security post on Saturday.
"We are currently working to pull all employees out, including the 26 Chinese citizens, from the mining site to ensure their safety," said Nabire Sub-regional Police Chief Superintendent Samuel Tatiratu on Sunday (22/2/2026), as quoted by antaranews.com.
Authorities have expanded the search along the Musairo River to locate and rescue remaining traditional gold miners, following the successful evacuation of 75 people earlier this weekend.
While the bodies of the victims have been transported to Nabire Regional Hospital, official identifications are still pending autopsy results. Security personnel remain on high alert in the Legari district to prevent further insurgent incursions and secure the volatile mining perimeter.
