inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Around 20 people died, including a baby, after a ship sank in a river in the western Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday (8/20/2024).
The sinking ship is a wooden boat that was traversing the Lukenie River, Mai-Ndombe Province, on Saturday night.
"The overloaded boat carrying around 300 people and goods sank after hitting wood on its way to the town of Nioki," Kutu district administrator Jacques Nzenza told AFP.
"Yesterday we found four bodies and today 16 others were found, including a nine-month-old baby," he explained.
According to Nzenza, the search is still ongoing.
"We always remind everyone that sailing at night is prohibited, because it is very dangerous," said Nzenza.
