Inp.polri.go.id - Denpasar. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that an active fault triggered the 5.7-magnitude earthquake felt across parts of Bali and East Java on Thursday (25/9/2025).

“The earthquake was a shallow event caused by active fault activity,” said BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono in a written statement, as quoted by antaranews.com.

Later analysis revised the magnitude to 5.3.

BMKG recorded five aftershocks, the strongest measuring 3.3. Tremors were felt at IV MMI intensity in East Java;s Banyuwangi and Penebel, causing dishes to break and doors to rattle. Intensity III MMI was reported in Bali’s Denpasar, Kuta, and Buleleng, while lighter tremors reached Jember, Bondowoso, Surabaya, Situbondo, and Lombok.

The epicenter was located 12 kilometers deep in the Bali Sea, about 46 kilometers northeast of Banyuwangi and 125 kilometers northwest of Denpasar.

BMKG urged residents to remain calm and inspect their buildings but confirmed the quake had no tsunami potential.
