Inp.polri.go.id - Banda Aceh. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Banda Aceh evacuated the body of a Greek sailor who died aboard a bulk carrier vessel sailing through the Bengal Strait, off Aceh.
“The deceased was identified as Fotsis Spyridon, 49, a crew member of MV Alpha Wisdom, a Greek-flagged bulk carrier en route from Batangas Port, Philippines, to Port Elizabeth, Africa,” said Basarnas Banda Aceh Chief Ibnu Harris Al Hussain on Saturday (24/5/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
MV Alpha Wisdom had contacted Basarnas on Saturday morning requesting assistance. The Banda Aceh search and rescue team, using rescue vessel KN Kresna 232, intercepted the carrier about seven nautical miles from Ulee Lheue Port, between Pulo Aceh and Weh Island.
Health quarantine officers boarded the vessel and confirmed the sailor died of non-contagious causes. The body was then transferred to KN Kresna ship and brought ashore to be handed over to local authorities and Zainoel Abidin Regional Hospital for further processing.
