Inp.polri.go.id - Batam. Barelang Sub-regional Police, covering Batam Rempang and Galang islands, has approved a request for the detention suspension of eight suspects involved in a riot on Rempang Island, Batam City, Riau Islands, earlier on September 7, 2023, a senior official said.
"We granted the request to suspend the detention to the eight suspects in name of the interests of the public and the people as well as for the benefit of the community. The detention suspension are for eight suspects who were detained on September 7," Barelang Sub-regional Police Chief Senior Superintendent Nugroho Tri Nuryanto said in Batam, on Saturday (16/9/2023).
He explained that that the suspension request came with specific conditions, namely mandatory reporting twice a week, under the confine of Batam City, and prohibited from engaging in any crime, emphasizing that the legal process against them continue despite the detention suspension approval.
"If the public security situation in Batam City, especially Rempang Island, is safe and favorable, of course, there are other considerations, there is a possibility of restorative justice," the chief said as quoted by antaranews.com as saying
Other suspects implicated in the September 11, 2023, riot on Rempang Island are under examination.
"For detention suspensions, we will see the considerations of the investigators, including advice and input from the leadership," Chief Nugroho said.
Following the detention suspension of the eight people, he invited residents, especially in Rempang Island, to maintain the security situation.
"We the police provide security. Our main task is to serve as protectors, protectors of society, law enforcers, guardians of public order. We are here to provide security only, nothing else, nothing more," he asserted.
