Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Forum of Young Women Activists (FAMM) has called on Minister of Culture Fadli Zon to publicly apologize for denying the sexual violence suffered by Chinese-Indonesian women during the May 1998 riots.
“As a survivor, Fadli Zon’s remarks deepen our wounds. It reflects the state’s continued neglect of past human rights violations,” said FAMM representative Tuba Falopi in a press release Saturday (14/6/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
Tuba criticized Fadli for undermining historical facts despite his reputation as a scholar of history.
“The state failed to protect and now chooses to turn a blind eye,” she added.
Diyah Wara Restiyati of the Indonesian Chinese Youth Association echoed the sentiment, stating that Fadli’s dismissal of the assaults as mere rumors was deeply hurtful.
“His comments erase our trauma and prove how the state avoids accountability,” she asserted
Activists urge the government to acknowledge past atrocities and support survivors through historical recognition and justice mechanisms.
